Good Day,
We had our first organizing meeting last night with 10 in attendance.
After a brief review of the goals of www.350.org (reduce carbon in atmosphere to 350 parts per million from 392
and www.1010global.org that seeks to reduce carbon emissions by 10 percent per year,
we brainstormed potential work party topics for this year.
We reviewed some of the ideas on 350.org web site, realizing that we don’t have a lot of time to organize for this year zeroed in on
a car free day, and to work with churches, other groups and the press to promote that people park their cars that day and use other modes
(walk, bike, and car pool. (PARTA does not run on Sunday….I spoke with Frank Hairston and he indicated that it has been discussed, and that we could work with PARTA towards that ends….of course he could not promise anything….
We discussed having a very large group ride (route to be determined) to promote the benefits of bicycling to reduce carbon.
- We talked about advocating that Kent become a Transition Town per www.transitionwork.org,
- That we promote windmill development such as http://www.bluesunrenew.com/index2.html and work towards a percentage of electrical generation for the city and university.(it was noted that the university has large expanses of open space…parking lots, that could be location for these windspire wind generators.
- We talked about a need for a comprehensive way of educating people about carbon per energy use. (here is a simple calculator http://www.carbonify.com/carbon-calculator.htm)
- that we need to work on recycling for compact fluorescents
- Planning a Walk and Roll event for next year sometime, bike symbols/boulevards on streets, etc.
- lots of other long term projects…… (Such as Sunday PARTA service)
Details from the meeting from notes by Jill Twark (as modified by me a little bit)
